For all the times a primary gets a skipperly pat on his brisket after saving the boat, it's time for this proud boardman to recognize a Legendary Moment in Squelchery performed Saturday on the Island Blossom by our own Jeff Cox.
At the leeward mark way upriver near the mouth of the Wye, the top six inches or so of the outrigger seat back snapped off as we jibed -- taking the block with it. Sewall (Jeff's sister), was now battling the mainsail one-to-one. Within a minute, Jeff made the dangerous high-wire trek aft under full sail, where a deft sibling swap was executed. Sewall took his place as the Shoeless Boardwoman, while Jeff -- sans gloves -- muscled the main without complaint, allowing us to remain on Lark's heel to correct for a victory.
Well squelched, my friend. Well squelched.
Indeed...and the Super Squelch proceeded to trim the main with a 1:1 purchase, call puffs, keep time on finishers, contemplate his golf handicap, and frame his fantasy football team. It's clear that the double-S has his eyes set on single-handing a log canoe one day.
Of course, this kind of performance runs in the family...proved by his sister running out on one of the boards in bare feet after handing the sheet over to the double-S. She was a Squelchin'.
Sister's performance on Jay Dee Saturday morning must be noted too - when equipment failed, she was the one to perch precariously on the outrigger, hanging onto the club for dear life while tying a bowline upside down & backwards. Then she went out again for round 2 of repairs. She's definitely a high-ranking SheMary!
